Things to See and Do Around St Andrews

Discover the charm and history of St Andrews — a coastal town that blends ancient landmarks, stunning beaches, and world-famous golf with vibrant modern life. Whether you love history, nature, or leisure, there’s something for everyone just a short walk or drive from your holiday home.

St Andrews Cathedral, St Rule’s Tower & Graveyard

Once Scotland’s largest and most magnificent medieval church, St Andrews Cathedral (begun in 1160) was the seat of Scotland’s leading bishops. The site has been a place of worship since the 8th century AD, when the relics of St Andrew, Scotland’s patron saint, were said to have arrived here.

The cathedral’s dramatic ruins remain a striking landmark, visible from the sea and forming the focal point of the town’s medieval streets. Surrounding the site is a historic graveyard, where golfing legend Old Tom Morris is buried, and the most complete monastic enclosure walls in Scotland.

Within the grounds stands St Rule’s Tower, a 33-metre stone tower built around 1130 — believed to be the first place of worship for the Augustinian canons. Climb the tower for breathtaking panoramic views across St Andrews and the coastline.
